your credit will stay on your phone for as long as it has not been used. i use my phone rarely and only use around Â£5.00 every two months.

I have a tesco mobile and have put Â£20 on it in 9 months – it does not expire the credit

I don't think it would be Tesco, i think no matter where you bought the phone, it would have a service provider i.e orange, vodafone, o2, t mobile etc. so it would be up to you to check out which one is allocated to the phone and what their tariffs are.
