i’m very confused and i am looking for a basic answer yes or no. if there is anybody that works in a mobile phone shop that could help me i would be very grateful. thank you.

yes they are. on http://www.play.com they sell ‘pre-pay phones’ and i bought one and it is just pay as you go. no difference at all.

Prepay and "Pay-as-you-go" are the same thing, yes. I hope this helps your confusion.
